Cylon

Like most successful musicians, DJ Meri — one half of the Rulers of the Deep — has travelled a long road. At the age of five he started to play piano, which was followed by school bands of different kind. After getting his musical education as a choir conductor, DJ Meri turned to radio broadcasting. Today, Meri hosts a weekly Saturday show called Tallinn Express with his production and DJ partner P. Julm at the most popular station in Estonia, Raadio 2.

Meri started producing in the late '90s. The first single with his partner P. Julm as Rulers of the Deep was released on Josh Wink’s OVUM Recordings. At the same time, Meri started his solo career, remixing tracks like “Finally” (Kings of Tomorrow) and the chart-topping “Sleep Talk” (ATFC).

In 2005 he started using the new moniker Cylon to produce more techno-ish tracks. The first track from Cylon, “Kit Cat”, was released by Honchos Music and got raving reviews from all over: “Filled up high on a psychedelic mix of house and soul, Meri takes us on a twisting instrumental journey from spaced out electronica through to jacking keys.” (DJ Mag)

When talking about Meri’s music or style, one has to understand that although Meri is mostly known as a house music artist, that’s not the whole case. His roots are closely tied with techno and breakbeat, and every now and then you can hear him play intelligent techno as Cylon. Today, DJ Meri is heavily influenced by techno, which is evident in his new tracks as well as his DJ-sets.

Nagu kõik edukad muusikud, on ka rühmituse Rulers of the Deep üks osapool DJ Meri tegutsenud kaua ja mitmes žanris. Viiendal eluaastal alanud klaveriõpingutele järgnes liikmelisus eri koolibändides. Koorijuhi eriala omandanud, sukeldus DJ Meri peagi raadioeetrisse. Tänasel päeval juhib ta koos produtsendist kolleegi ja partnerdiskori P. Julmaga igalaupäevast saadet Tallinn Express Eesti menukaimas raadiojaamas R2.

Produtseerimist alustas Meri 1990. aastate lõpul. Meri ja Julma duo Rulers of the Deep esiksingel ilmus Josh Winki kaubamärgi OVUM Recordings alt. Samal ajal alustas Meri soolokarjääri, remiksides palasid nagu Kings of Tomorrow’ “Finally” ja edetabelite tippudesse jõudnud ATFC “Sleep Talk”.

2005. aastal hakkas Meri techno-maigulisema muusika tootmisel kasutama uut artistinime Cylon. Esimene selle alt ilmunud pala “Kit Cat”, mille laskis välja Honchos Music, kogus ohtralt kiitvat kriitikat. “House’i ja souli psühhedeelse kokteiliga pilgeni täidetud Meri viib meid vonklevale instrumentaalreisile kosmilisest electronicast jõuliselt narkootiliste klahvpillideni,” leidis ajakiri DJ Mag.
